American College of Cardiology Provides Members with Customized Mobile Software
More cardiologists will be reaching into their lab coat pocket to access the latest clinical information thanks to the American College of Cardiology (ACC). At the College’s 55th Annual Scientific Session next week in Atlanta, GA, all association members and users of Cardiosource, an online cardiology resource center, will receive a complimentary subscription to a newly developed mobile-based clinical application, Epocrates-ACC Essentials for Cardiology.
The ACC joined forces with Epocrates, Inc., a California-based medical software company, to develop the most comprehensive set of cardiology tools available.
Today’s cardiologists are constantly on the move – whether in clinic, surgery or on-call. To support cardiologists’ need to be mobile and help alleviate the increasing demands on their time, the ACC is encouraging the use of mobile devices with the introduction of this customized application for its members.
“Due to the nature of the specialty, cardiologists are typically among early technology adopters, using the most advanced medical and information technologies to work efficiently and effectively,” said Alfred Bove, M.D., F.A.C.C., editor in chief of Cardiosource. “We found that many of our members already have mobile devices and were seeking more support tools to improve and streamline their practice. We believe this product is the answer with the combination of new, innovative tools and trusted resources.”
The Epocrates-ACC Essentials for Cardiology mobile application features:
- Epocrates Essentials – the premium guide includes more than 3,300 brand and generic drugs with information such as dosing, pricing and interactions. Cardiologists can also reference 300 lab test panels when interpreting patients’ results. As an additional decision support tool, the guide’s more than 1,200 diseases are integrated with a symptom assessment tool and treatment recommendations.
- CardioMath – a suite of 50 commonly used formulas in cardiovascular medicine developed by Dr. Chi-Ming Chow. The application was designed to provide a way to perform day-to-day calculations in areas of echocardiography, EKG, epidemiology, exercise stress test, general medicine, hemodynamics and unit conversion (SI and US), both accurately and efficiently. Each area includes standard algorithms as well as supporting information such as typical results and implications.
- Body Mass Index (BMI) and Obesity Tool – During the past 20 years, obesity among adults and adolescents has risen significantly in the United States. To support cardiologists with patient diagnosis, education and treatment, this new application features an in-depth weight management tool. The tool, using body mass index (BMI) measurements, provides recommendations, weight loss guidelines, a Basal Energy Expenditure Calculator and other useful information.
- Cardiology Continuing Medical Education (CME) Courses – new Epocrates MobileCME courses developed by the ACC will be available directly on cardiologists’ mobile devices. The courses can be completed at their convenience, in any location, helping cardiologists stay current on medical developments and industry news.
“I am looking forward to putting Essentials for Cardiology into practice,” said Deepak Talreja, M.D., Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital/ Eastern Virginia Medical School. “Locating information on my PDA provides me an opportunity to share the results with my patients and engage in a meaningful dialogue with the latest available information.”
ACC members and Cardiosource users can receive a complimentary subscription to Epocrates-ACC Essentials for Cardiology by visiting booth #2857 at the organization’s Annual Scientific Session in Atlanta, GA, March 11–14, 2006.
