Epocrates Adds Safety And Monitoring Information

Advance for Physician Assistants

To help health care providers prescribe more safely, Epocrates Inc. has announced the addition of safety and monitoring sections to its mobile drug reference guide for the more than 500,000 users in the Epocrates network.

The new sections include black box warning information throughout its application. According to the company, the public visibility of these warnings has significantly increased in the last 18 months, and several blockbuster drugs for depression and pain management have now been required to include such warnings in their prescribing information.

One safety and monitoring section includes information on monitoring parameters, which are common for drug classes such as cardiovascular, psychiatric and neurologic agents. Another section is pharmacology, which provides information on drug metabolism, excretion, class and mechanism of action to help providers better understand the properties and actions of the drugs they are prescribing.

Epocrates says its medical editors use FDA-approved prescribing information, primary medical literature and evidence-based medicine guidelines to identify and provide clinically relevant content that providers need to make more informed decisions. The new sections have been designed to provide new safety data and to improve accessibility to existing content.
