Epocrates, a San Mateo, Calif.-based company that makes handheld clinical-decisionmaking tools for healthcare professionals, named Rick Van Hoesen its new chief financial officer and senior vice president of finance. He replaces Robert McCulloch, who left for personal reasons. The company declined to elaborate on McCulloch's departure. Most recently, Van Hoesen was CFO of NetIQ Corp., a publicly traded enterprise software company acquired by Attachmate Corp. in June. He has also served as CFO of XACCT Technologies, Micro Focus and Wall Data, and has held senior management positions at Sun Microsystems and NCR Corp.'s Teradata unit. "Rick's extensive CFO experience will be an invaluable resource as we develop the corporate infrastructure, processes and controls necessary to support our growing network of healthcare professionals and industry partners," Epocrates Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Kirk Loevner said in a news release. Founded in 1998, privately held Epocrates sells software and services that allow doctors to check insurers' formularies, research drugs and diseases, and receive instant medical alerts via a mobile device.
