Built-In Dosing Calculator Easy to Find
and Use

One of the notable enhancements so far in 2004 to the Epocrates Rx Pro drug reference is the addition of the embedded dosing calculator. It’s easy to find and easy to use. It is accessible right from within the drug monograph. When you are looking at the dosing sections, if text is underlined, it links the dosing calculator. In general, users should make it a point to tap on underlined text within the Epocrates application because it typically links to other content and features or provides additional info in a pop-up.

Epocrates User Recognized by Jed Foundation

Kudos go out to Epocrates user David Brent, M.D., Academic Chief, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic and Endowed Chair of Suicide Studies at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, who is being honored June 7, at the Jed Foundation’s Third Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony in New York City, for his contributions to reducing youth suicide.

The Jed Foundation is a nonprofit public charity committed to reducing the youth suicide rate and improving the mental health safety net provided to college students nationwide. Phillip and Donna Satow started The Jed Foundation in 2000. The Satows lost their youngest son, Jed, 20, a university student, to suicide in 1998. The Satows have turned their personal tragedy into a nationwide effort to reprioritize mental health on college campuses and prevent suicide from affecting another family and campus community.

Epocrates is showing its support of the Jed Foundation by participating in this annual event. Proceeds from the annual awards dinner assist the Foundation in continuing its lifesaving work, which in 2003 included providing an additional 1.7 million students at 300 colleges with free access to the Foundation’s Ulifeline.org website, leading the development of an important pilot suicide prevention program for college campuses, and initiating the first-ever National College Suicide Registry to accurately measure the severity of this problem. Even with the Foundation’s progress, it will continue to reach out to college students, as suicide remains the second leading cause of death for college students.

Epocrates will be pursuing other ways to support the Foundation in 2004 including providing its Internet-based drug and clinical reference Epocrates Rx Online to campus health centers. For more information, visit www.jedfoundation.org.

Epocrates Advocate of the Month –
Dr. Kevin O’Neil

Advocate of the Month
This month we would like to thank Sarasota, Florida geriatrician Dr. Kevin O'Neil for his continued support of Epocrates over the years and for raising awareness about Epocrates products. Recently, Dr. O’Neil was featured in the New York Times regional newspaper article, “A dangerous mix: Combining drugs with certain foods or herbal supplements can be harmful to your health.” Here is an excerpt from the article.

Dr. O’Neil admits that drug interactions were little understood when he was in medical school nearly 30 years ago. People were taking fewer vitamins and herbal supplements back then, too. But now he doesn’t take any chances. He uses a hand-held computer in his office to cross-reference drugs, foods and supplements to give his patients the latest information about things that could help or hurt them when they're on certain medications.

“There's a wonderful program I use that I've recommended to other doctors. It's called Epocrates. It's not that expensive, maybe $50 a year, and I can download it into my Palm Pilot, which I can keep with me to do multiple checks on drugs and herbal supplements," O'Neil said.

Advocate Program
We created the Advocate Program for users who are interested in sharing information about Epocrates software with colleagues. For example, many Advocates demonstrate Epocrates software at medical society conferences and academic grand rounds.

For more information on the Epocrates Advocate Program including how to join, please visit our website.
