Advocate of the Month - James E. Cade, DDS

Advocate of the Month

James E. Cade DDS

Professor, Dept. Of Oral Diagnosis, Medicine & Radiology, Louisiana State University School of Dentistry State Dental Officer, State of Louisiana National Guard

"I use Epocrates routinely, both personally and with my students. As the Baby Boomer generation increases with age, greater populations of dental patients have medical disorders and are on more medications than ever before. There are so many new medications coming out on the market that keeping up with them can be difficult. Additionally, more patients are taking alternative medications, which are included in Epocrates Rx Pro. The Epocrates AutoUpdate feature allows my students and I to access current information rapidly.

In the clinic our students do a complete medical history on all patients treated at the LSU Dental School and are required to write a synopsis of all medications, medical disorders, and abnormal laboratory values (we routinely take serum chemistries for screening our patients for potential medical disorders). The Epocrates knowledge base reduces the risk of compromising the patient's health when applied to the patient’s treatment. I urge the students to consider getting Epocrates Rx because the program is free and current.

While I was in service with the Army in Iraq, Epocrates was also helpful when considering new medications and contributed to the medical and dental continuing education programs we presented there.
I believe Epocrates Essentials would have helped even more."

New Dermatology Content

This past quarter and continuing through the month of September, our Medical Information editors have been focusing on dermatology medications, resulting in:

  • Addition of previously requested dermatologic products
  • Improvements to existing monographs for dermatologic products
  • Revision of the topical corticosteroid classification system and re-categorization of the products within these 7 classes
  • Addition of a new table: "Corticosteroids, Topical".

Half-life Information Coming Soon

Our editors are also in the process of incorporating half-life information into the "Excretion" field under "Other Info", in every Epocrates Rx drug monograph. They expect to complete this extensive project by the end of the year.

Save Your Patients Money on Their Prescriptions

Did you know that the average copay is $9 for a generic drug, $19 for a preferred brand and $29 for a non-preferred drug?1. Looking up Epocrates formulary information before you prescribe a drug can save your patients $10-20 per prescription.

Epocrates includes free formulary information for hundreds of health plans and hospitals, and adds new ones each week. If you use Epocrates Rx (free) or any of our premium mobile or online references, you can access formularies. The more you use Epocrates formularies, the more likely it is that other health plans will make their formularies available as well. If you would like to access more formularies via Epocrates, here is what you need to do:

Contact Your Health Plans and Hospitals
Let the Medical Directors and Provider Relations staff in your area know that you want their formulary information added to Epocrates. Your voice counts tremendously.
Use Your Formularies Often
The more frequently formulary information is accessed by Epocrates users in aggregate, the easier it is for Epocrates to show a health plan or hospital that prescribers are using formularies at the point of care. For a quick tutorial, download our Formulary Tips Fact Sheet or view our product tour.
Add More Formularies to Your PDA or Desktop
Each week we add new formularies to Epocrates. It is easy to update your Epocrates formulary selections to add the ones you are missing. Click here to see the list of formularies in your state.

Also, remember to AutoUpdate regularly to get the latest formulary changes!

Unsolicited testimonial sent to Epocrates recently:
"I had a personal experience recently with my wife. She was prescribed a generic antibiotic. When I picked up the prescription, the pharmacy tech said that it was a lot to pay for the generic. I checked the formulary on Epocrates and found that for our insurance the generic was tier 3 and the brand was tier 2. I told the pharmacist the brand would be cheaper. He gave me a "yeah right!" look while the tech checked it out. My Epocrates formulary was right. I saved $15 and taught the pharmacist a lesson. It was a good night!” Joseph Toshach, M.D., Arundel, ME

Question of the Month

Q. I would appreciate clarification on the meaning of the symbols used in the drug interaction checklist.

A. When viewing the interaction list for a drug monograph, you may tap on the ^ for a list of drugs implicated or included in the interaction group. Tap on the underlined interaction group for a more detailed explanation of the mechanism, effect, and severity of the drug interaction.

You may also search for drug interactions using MultiCheck. Tap on MultiCheck symbol. Select up to 30 drugs or alternative medications (look up one at a time and tap on it to add it to your list). Tap "Run" to search for interaction results. If an interaction is found, the pair of drugs will be linked with a <-> symbol. To read the description of the interaction, tap on the underlined pair.

To access a list of abbreviations used in Epocrates Rx, tap "Menu", "Options", and "Abbreviations". To access the list on Epocrates Rx Online, go to the "Abbrev & Codes tab".
