I'm an internist in Salem, NH, and have been a member of the Epocrates network since 2002. I currently use the Epocrates Rx Pro premium drug reference on a
routine, daily basis. Epocrates Rx Pro provides a drug reference that is updated regularly. The drug interaction feature provides reassurance with complicated drug regimens. Drug wholesale prices are listed, and allow me to address patients' financial concerns.

Like most physicians, I'm pressed to complete CME requirements, and was very interested to learn about the new MobileCME system from Epocrates.

MobileCME is a unique new feature that takes advantage of the PDA format. Integrated seamlessly into the Epocrates system, the modules are self-explanatory, and articles are formatted for a PDA screen - short paragraphs that fit on a single page.

My mobile device enables me to carry a CME storehouse anywhere. By maintaining a log of CME programs on my Sony Clié, I can use spare minutes to work on CME exams. If I can't complete an exam at one sitting, I can easily return at a later time, picking up where I left off.

Hundreds of articles are available to download easily for free,a unique feature that most web-based CMEs do not offer. And unlike smart phone systems, one does not have to maintain a connection to complete a module.

Now I can start CME modules whenever time is available, and complete them at leisure. When I synchronize with my email conduit, I receive my CME confirmations shortly thereafter by e-mail. I recommend Epocrates users give MobileCME a try.

We receive a lot of questions from customers about how to remain current with our mobile software applications. The answer is easy: AutoUpdate!

AutoUpdate is a free feature available to all our mobile software users, that enables you to connect to the Epocrates servers and receive updated clinical data directly onto your mobile device.

To AutoUpdate quickly and effectively, make sure your personal computer is connected to the Internet and that your device is connected to your computer (via cable or by sitting it in the cradle). Performing a HotSync (Palm OS devices) or an ActiveSync (Pocket PC OS devices) will initiate the Epocrates AutoUpdate process. If your device has wireless Internet access, you can also set your device to AutoUpdate wirelessly once a week.

During the synchronization, our application will connect to our update server and send any new clinical and formulary content, as well as timely DocAlert messages, to your handheld device.

We update our clinical data at least once a week, so by AutoUpdating regularly you will always have the latest information at your fingertips.

Two tips for a successful AutoUpdate:

• Be sure to temporarily disable any firewall software before you initiate the AutoUpdate process. Although we use standard services for communicating with our servers, we have seen circumstances where personal firewalls block the AutoUpdate process.
• Make sure your AutoUpdate server settings contain your current Epocrates username, password and the correct sync server information (sync6.epocrates.com).

In Brief

Q. What does the underlined caret symbol, (Palm) or (Pocket PC) , mean?

A. The caret symbol tells you that helpful additional information is available. Tap on the caret symbol to view that information.

Within the "Drug Interactions" section of a drug monograph (in the Epocrates Rx, Epocrates Rx Pro, and Epocrates Essentials references), tap on the caret next to a drug group to view a list of drugs in that group that are known to produce the same interaction (in the Epocrates Rx Online web-based reference, click on the arrow, , for the same information).

Within the "Interpretation" section of a lab monograph (in the Epocrates Lab and Epocrates Essentials refererences), tap on the caret next to a disease, medication or spurious cause to view follow-up information that can help you confirm your diagnosis. In many cases, these clinical follow-up comments include direct links (green, underlined text) to lab, disease or drug monographs as well.
