Advocate of the Month
Steven Koshler, Student
Steven volunteering in Jamaica
I’m a pre-medical student at Florida State University and I have used Epocrates mobile software for years; I started with the Epocrates Rx free drug reference, and now use the Epocrates Essentials all-in-one reference which includes integrated information on drugs, diseases, and labs.
I belong to a volunteer group at FSU called International Medical Outreach, and in February this year myself and 17 other members, along with our physician sponsor and several nurses, went on a medical mission to Jamaica.
While in Jamaica, we set up clinics where we could perform basic medical procedures including blood pressure testing, diabetic screening, physicals, and other necessary procedures. Our goal is also to increase awareness of local, prevalent diseases. We took a vast array of prescription and OTC medicines with us, and other essential supplies.
But let me say that the Epocrates Essentials reference was the most valuable asset we had the whole trip! Because our medicine selection was limited, there were many instances in which the preferred drug for a condition was unavailable, so the alternative drugs in the “Dx” tab were extremely helpful. I can’t express to you how amazing this program is! I'd guess we used it 50 times a day. It was also a great learning tool for many of our team members.
Some of the cases we encountered were really shocking. For example, we met one man who had diabetes, thus very poor circulation. He had stepped on a nail back in August and it never fully healed. Then after hurricane Ivan, while cleaning up debris, he tore it open again (none of the locals wear closed-toe shoes). So now it pretty much needs to be amputated.
We’ll be returning to Jamaica in July and I’ll be making sure that we have AutoUpdated for the latest Epocrates clinical information before we leave. With the Epocrates Essentials reference on our PDAs, we’ll be ready for anything!
Advocate Program
We created the Advocate Program for anyone who is interested in sharing information about Epocrates software with peers.
If you would like to become an Epocrates Advocate, please write to advocates@epocrates.com. Include your name, credentials or titles, city and state, and your sub-specialty (if applicable).
