This Month in Medical History

July 20 1836 — Birth of Sir Thomas Clifford Allbutt, an English physician who invented the short clinical thermometer

Until Allbutt's invention in 1866, a patient had to hold a foot-long thermometer for 20 minutes! Albutt's 6" portable thermometer could take a temperature in just 5 minutes.

In 1916, at the age of 80, he was elected president of the British Medical Association.
