Bugs on a Plane

Influenza and parainfluenza viruses were the most common respiratory pathogens in sick passengers.

Airplane travelers may be exposed to a variety of noxious respiratory pathogens, but few data are available on exactly what these organisms are. Researchers now offer some baseline descriptive data on which respiratory pathogens tend to travel by airplane.

Overuse of Empirical Antibiotics for Acute Diarrhea

Antimicrobial therapy is rarely indicated for acute diarrhea; current guidelines recommend that stool culture be performed when such therapy is prescribed. In this evaluation of Tennessee Medicaid data, antimicrobials were prescribed for more than 10% of diarrhea episodes, usually without a stool culture. Of 315,828 diarrheal episodes identified, 10.4% were treated with antimicrobials; only 10.6% had a stool culture.

What's New With Epocrates

Epocrates Rx drug reference improvements

We recently made some major upgrades to our mobile drug reference for Palm and Pocket PC OS devices, based on your feedback. The generic name at the top of brand monographs is now a link to the "Choose Drug" screen where you can select the generic monograph or an alternative brand. Also, in the dosing section for discontinued drugs, there is now a direct link to "see generic." Within the Drug Interactions section of the monograph there is now a direct link to the MultiCheck® feature: "Run drug interaction checker." When you click on that link it will automatically launch MultiCheck and add that drug to your checklist.

Tech Tips

Going abroad with your cell phone?

It’s easy to find coverage. Most phones are tri or quad band compatible, meaning they have 850, 900, 1800 and/or 1900 bands. If your phone is U.S. based, it is set to the 850 and 1900 bands. To get coverage in another country, your phone must be set to the 900 and 1800 bands. To fix the problem, simply go into your phone's Settings menu and manually scan for available networks. Once you find a frequency that works, simply select it and it’s ready to work. For more detailed information, like roaming rates, contact your provider.

Summer Travel Advice

“As summer vacations approach I feel it is important to emphasize sun safety for all ages and all skin tones. Sunblock with SPF 15 should be worn on all exposed areas. Wearing hats and sunglasses, using an umbrella, and reducing exposures between the hours of 10AM and 3PM, when the sun is at its peak with ultraviolet rays, are other ways to be safer in the sun. Also, children playing in water can be taught from a younger age that it’s important to reapply sunblock before reentering the water.”
