Emil J Freireich, M.D., Professor of Medicine, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center
Emil J Freireich, MD, is Director of the Adult Leukemia Research Program and the Special Medical Education Programs, as well as the Ruth Harriet Ainsworth Professor in Developmental Therapeutics, at The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Freireich has pioneered many facets of cancer research, including innovation in the detection of minimal residual disease and the development of concepts underpinning combination chemotherapy, which were first applied to the management of childhood leukemia and resulted in the first curative therapy for a systemic cancer in humans. Dr. Freireich’s research has been recognized with many important research awards, including the Albert Lasker Medical Research Award (1972), the fifth Charles F. Kettering Prize of the General Motors Cancer Research Foundation (1983), and the Robert Roesler de Villiers Award of the Leukemia Society of America, Inc. (1979). He is a current member of the editorial review boards for Leukemia Research, the Journal of Experimental Therapeutics and Oncology, the International Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Current Therapeutic Research.
