COVID-19 Vaccines: epocrates Patient Counseling Pearls | CDC/FDA/ACOG Guidance
Key Points
The FDA formally approved the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine on 8/23/21—to be marketed under the brand name Comirnaty—for the prevention of COVID-19 in individuals ≥16 years of age. The vaccine continues to be available under emergency use authorization (EUA) for individuals ages 12 through 15 and for administration as a third dose in certain immunocompromised patients. The other two vaccines currently authorized for emergency use only by the FDA in the U.S. are the Moderna mRNA vaccine and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen COVID-19 vaccine for persons ≥18 yo. The mRNA vaccines require 2 doses, whereas the Janssen vaccine is given as a single dose.
