Elevated blood glucose may contribute to reduced sperm motility, erectile performance
July 18, 2025

Men with even minimally elevated blood sugar levels experienced reduced sperm motility and erectile function, according to findings presented at the Endocrine Society’s 2025 annual meeting in San Francisco.
Study details. The long-term study, part of the FAME 2.0 project, followed 200 healthy men aged 18–85 from 2014 to 2020, concluding with 117 participants. Researchers tracked changes in semen quality, hormone levels, erectile function, and metabolic health, including BMI and HbA1c.
Results. While hormone levels and semen parameters remained largely normal, men with HbA1c levels below—but approaching—the 6.5% diabetes threshold showed declines in sperm movement and erectile function. Testosterone levels weren't directly linked to erectile function but did correlate with libido.
