Patient suicide takes emotional and professional toll on clinicians
November 28, 2025

In a survey of 96 mental health professionals (MHPs), over half had cared for patients who died by suicide, most of whom had been diagnosed with psychotic or affective disorders. About one third of MHPs reported moderate to extreme emotional impact, commonly sadness, regret, and guilt. While 52% found informal support from colleagues or family helpful, respondents noted a lack of formal training to manage such incidents. Most experienced patient suicide after completing their training, highlighting gaps in preparedness.
Clinical takeaway: Incorporating structured psychiatry training modules that address the emotional impact, legal considerations, coping strategies, and available support after a patient’s suicide—through workshops or reflective sessions—might enhance clinicians’ preparedness and resilience.
