Thunderstorms tied to surge in asthma-related ED visits
November 10, 2025

Researchers reviewed 4,439 asthma-related ED visits across three Wichita hospitals from 2020 to 2024 and identified 38 thunderstorm days. Although these days represented only 2% of the study period, they accounted for 14% of all asthma visits. Mean daily visits during storms approached 18, compared with about 3 on non-storm days.
Older age was the only demographic factor associated with increased storm-related ED visits; gender, location, and disposition showed no significant effect. Authors conclude that thunderstorms pose a substantial risk for patients with asthma and recommend incorporating storm-specific precautions into asthma action plans. Findings highlight the need for public health preparedness to reduce ED burden and protect vulnerable populations.
