Endovascular aortic aneurysm repair: Local or general anesthesia for octogenarians?
May 24, 2024
Local anesthesia was linked to shorter lengths of stay, less blood loss, and reduced respiratory complications compared with general anesthesia in octogenarians undergoing endovascular aortic aneurysm repair. Mortality at 30 days wasn’t different.
- Previous studies have shown favorable results for local anesthesia in the general population undergoing endovascular aortic aneurysm repair.
- This database analysis study included 16,398 patients over age 80 years old; 7.3% underwent local anesthesia and 92.7% had general anesthesia.
- Length of stay, blood loss, pulmonary complications, as well as home as the discharge location were more favorable with local anesthesia.
