ACOG releases updated guidance for syphilis screening in pregnancy
April 23, 2024

In the context of rapidly rising rates of congenital syphilis, ACOG's updated practice advisory recommends that obstetricians screen pregnant individuals by serology at the first prenatal care visit. This should be followed by universal rescreening during the third trimester and at birth rather than use of a risk-based approach to testing. Previously, ACOG recommended testing during the third trimester for those women considered at risk of contracting syphilis during pregnancy.
