Stable coronary artery disease: Which symptoms predict success from PCI?

May 30, 2024

Symptom nature was a powerful predictor of PCI efficacy, in this secondary analysis of the placebo-controlled ORBITA-2 trial. Rose angina and guideline-based typical angina strongly predicted PCI efficacy. However, symptom severity and nature correlated poorly with disease severity.

  • Evidence from the placebo-controlled ORBITA-2 trial had shown that residual symptoms persisted in many patients post PCI.
  • The ORBITA smartphone app was used to collect symptom severity and nature pre-randomization; the Rose angina questionnaire assessed symptoms and quality of life.
  • Quantitative coronary angiography, stress echo, fractional flow reserve, and instantaneous wave-free ratio were used to assess disease severity.
