CDC: Drug-resistant superbugs surge in NYC
June 30, 2025

Between 2019 and 2024, New York City experienced a sharp rise in New Delhi metallo-β-lactamase (NDM)–producing carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE), with annual cases increasing from 58 to 388. For the first time, NDM-positive CRE surpassed Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC)-positive CRE in prevalence. This shift is clinically significant: NDM confers resistance to key treatments like ceftazidime-avibactam, often used for KPC-positive infections. Unlike KPC, NDM is associated with international travel and is more difficult to treat due to limited antibiotic options. The findings underscore the need for clinicians to be aware of local resistance patterns and consider molecular testing to guide empiric therapy. Enhanced surveillance and infection control measures are critical to containing further spread.
