CDC: First cases of sexually transmitted tinea confirmed in the U.S.
November 4, 2024

Four additional cases of Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII (TMVII), an emerging fungus, were diagnosed between April and July 2024 in New York City among men who have sex with men. Tinea occurred on the face, buttocks, or genitals and was successfully treated with antifungal medications.
Public health implications
Health care providers should be aware that TMVII is an emerging infection spread through sex. Patients typically present with itchy, scaly, ring-shaped lesions on the trunk, buttocks, genitals, face, or extremities. Counsel patients to avoid skin-to-skin contact and sharing personal items.
Treatment:
- Oral terbinafine (250 mg daily)
- Treat until lesions resolve
- May require up to 3 months
