CDC warns of Salmonella outbreak tied to cucumbers shipped nationwide
May 22, 2025

CDC is investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to whole cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers Inc. and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. between April 29 and May 19, 2025. The cucumbers were shipped to retail stores, restaurants, and institutions across the U.S., and may still be in circulation. As of the latest update, 26 people in 15 states have been infected with the outbreak strain, and nine have been hospitalized. No deaths have been reported. Some cases were linked to cucumbers served on cruise ships departing from Florida. The affected cucumbers were sold loose or in packages labeled “supers,” “selects,” or “plains,” and are not organic varieties. CDC advises consumers to discard cucumbers of unknown origin and sanitize any surfaces they may have touched. Healthcare providers should be alert for symptoms of Salmonella—especially in children, older adults, and immunocompromised patients—and consider recent cucumber consumption in patients presenting with GI illness.
