Exercise during chemotherapy linked to improved quality‑of‑life outcomes in breast cancer patients
March 2, 2026

A meta-analysis of 21 randomized trials (3,024 participants) found that exercise interventions were associated with moderate improvements in quality-of-life measures among women undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer. Aerobic exercise showed the strongest association, while combined aerobic–strength training and strength-only programs were also associated with significant gains. Effects varied substantially across studies, and authors noted that exercise modality significantly moderated outcomes. Further research is needed to define optimal exercise prescriptions during chemotherapy.
Clinical takeaway: Consider incorporating exercise counseling—particularly aerobic or mixed aerobic strength programs—for women undergoing chemotherapy, as evidence continues to support quality‑of‑life benefits.
