How old is too old for osteoporosis treatment?
July 22, 2025

Use of osteoporosis therapy after a fracture in patients over age 80 was linked with lower rates of hospitalization and all-cause mortality, in this study presented at the Endocrine Society’s 2025 annual meeting. These findings support the benefits of individualized treatment strategies in older adults, including those over 80, to improve long-term health outcomes.
Study details. Researchers analyzed data from 88,676 patients aged 80 and older who experienced a fracture due to osteoporosis. Using the TriNetX health research database, they compared outcomes between patients treated with bisphosphonates, denosumab, raloxifene, or teriparatide vs. patients not on osteoporosis treatment. The study controlled for a wide range of comorbidities, including obesity, HTN, CVD, DM, and vitamin D deficiency.
Results. Patients who received osteoporosis treatment after a fracture had a lower risk of hospitalization and all-cause mortality over a 5-year follow-up period.
