Iron therapy in patients with RLS and iron-deficiency anemia: Does route matter?
June 12, 2024

Among patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA), IV and oral iron both resulted in marked improvement in RLS symptoms, with no statistically significant difference between groups.
- For this randomized, double-blind trial, investigators recruited 70 patients with RLS and IDA. Participants were randomly assigned 1:1 to treatment with oral ferrous sulfate or IV ferumoxytol. Primary outcomes of Clinical Global Impression—Improvement score and change from baseline in International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group rating scale score were assessed at week 6.
- Both IV and oral iron were associated with a marked improvement in RLS symptoms, with no statistically significant difference between treatment groups. No serious adverse events were observed in either treatment group.
