Study details: This cross-sectional study analyzed the nutritional content of foods advertised during 10 televised NFL games from September to November 2023. Researchers recorded 102 food-related commercials, assessing the sodium, calorie, and fat content of the advertised foods.

Results: The median sodium content per serving of the advertised foods was 910 mg (220-1,872 mg), equivalent to 40% of the daily recommended sodium intake. These foods also had high calorie and fat content, often exceeding recommended daily intakes.

Clinical impact: Clinicians can counsel patients, especially those with chronic conditions like heart failure, kidney disease, and diabetes, on the risks of consuming high-sodium and high-calorie foods frequently advertised during NFL games.
