Sugary drinks linked to higher odds of anxiety in adolescents
February 20, 2026

A systematic review and meta-analysis of nine studies (seven cross-sectional, two longitudinal) found a consistent, positive association between sugar‑sweetened beverage (SSB) intake and anxiety in adolescents. Seven studies reported significant links, and the two longitudinal studies showed small but persistent associations over one year. Multiple regression analyses likewise demonstrated a small but consistent positive relationship. The pooled random‑effects meta-analysis showed that higher SSB consumption was associated with increased odds of anxiety disorders (odds ratio, 1.34; 95% confidence interval, 1.14–1.59).
Clinical takeaway: Although the evidence is observational and cannot prove causation, these findings suggest SSB intake may be a modifiable factor in rising adolescent anxiety.
