Use of heavy lead aprons during dental x-rays may soon be a thing of the past

According to a media statement released by the American Dental Association (ADA) on February 1, the use of lead abdominal aprons or thyroid collars when conducting dental X-rays is no longer recommended. After reviewing published studies, an ADA expert panel determined that lead aprons and thyroid collars aren't necessary to shield patients from radiation exposure. The recommendations apply to all patients, regardless of age or health status, including pregnancy. Medical physicists with the FDA supported the panel’s development of the recommendations.
