Hepatitis B Exacerbation
severe acute hepatitis exacerbations reported when D/C anti-HBV tx incl. adefovir; monitor hepatic fxn closely for at least several months if D/C tx; resume anti-HBV tx if needed
Nephrotoxicity
chronic adefovir admin. may cause nephrotoxicity in pts at risk or w/ underlying renal impairment; closely monitor renal fxn, adjust dose as needed
HIV Resistance
HIV resistance may emerge in chronic HBV pts w/ untreated or unrecognized HIV when given anti-HBV tx incl. adefovir that may have activity against HIV
Lactic Acidosis/Severe Hepatomegaly with Steatosis
lactic acidosis and severe hepatomegaly w/ steatosis, incl. fatal cases, associated w/ nucleoside analog use alone or in combination; incr. risk if female, obese, or long-term nucleoside analog tx; suspend tx if clinical or laboratory findings suggest lactic acidosis or hepatotoxicity
