AAFP backs updated breast cancer screening recommendations from USPSTF
June 17, 2024

The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has endorsed the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force's updated recommendation for breast cancer screening, which advises screening all women ages 40 to 74 every two years. The new guidance suggests that this broader age range could save 19% more lives compared with the previous recommendation. AAFP's endorsement follows a detailed review and consultation process, although some caveats were noted, such as USPSTF's reliance on indirect evidence and the absence of new studies on lowering the age of initiating screening mammography.
