Antihistamines don't appear to lower osteoarthritis risk, joint pain

November 13, 2024

Antihistamine use doesn't reduce joint pain or the risk of developing osteoarthritis, according to a large observational cohort study.

Researchers analyzed data from 25,003 participants ages 45 to 75 in a Swedish EpiHealth cohort. Participants self-reported allergy, joint pain, and osteoarthritis, with additional data from healthcare registers. Osteoarthritis, pain in knees/hips/hands-wrists, and future incident diagnosis of osteoarthritis were the outcomes.

Findings suggest that antihistamines weren't associated with:

  • less osteoarthritis/joint pain: risk ratios 1.13 (95% CI, 1.06-1.20) and 1.02 (95% CI, 0.99-1.05), respectively.
  • future osteoarthritis diagnosis: hazard ratio, 1.15 (95% CI, 1.03-1.28).
