CDC warns of salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry
May 7, 2025

CDC has reported a new salmonella outbreak linked to backyard poultry, affecting seven individuals across six states. The outbreak involves a strain previously associated with hatcheries. Despite the poultry appearing healthy, they can carry salmonella that spread through contact with their environment.
Health officials emphasize the importance of hygiene practices, such as washing hands after handling poultry or their eggs and avoiding eating or drinking around them. Symptoms of severe salmonella infection include high fever, prolonged diarrhea, bloody stools, and signs of dehydration. Physicians should advise patients with backyard poultry to follow safety guidelines to prevent infection.
