Consider potential drug interactions when prescribing colchicine

When given with drugs affecting the CYP3A4 and P-glycoprotein pathways, colchicine has especially potent reactions and can cause adverse events like like pancytopenia, multiorgan failure, and cardiac arrhythmias, according to 2 AHRQ-funded studies. For example, when combined with atazanavir, colchicine can lead to rhabdomyolysis/myopathy or agranulocytosis.
