Hantavirus outbreak prompts CDC quarantine

Andes virus is a hantavirus, a family of rodent-borne pathogens that typically spread to humans through contact with infected mouse urine, droppings, or saliva. Andes stands apart as the only species of this virus capable of person-to-person transmission, which is why this cluster on a cruise ship has drawn an international response.
The virus causes hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), with a case fatality rate around 38% once respiratory symptoms develop. Early signs appear 4 to 42 days after exposure: fatigue, fever, and muscle aches in the thighs, hips, and back. About half of patients also develop headache, chills, dizziness, or gastrointestinal symptoms.
The disease can progress rapidly to respiratory failure, and there is no specific antiviral treatment. Care is supportive, with intubation if needed.
Person-to-person spread requires prolonged close contact, typically during the early symptomatic phase. The highest risk is among sexual partners and people sharing a bed or bedroom with an infected person. Patients are generally infectious only while symptomatic.
U.S, passengers are being isolated and monitored for 42 days at a facility or at home. CDC has notified state health departments where disembarked passengers reside. Overall public risk remains extremely low, and no US-soil cases tied to the outbreak have been reported.
“Symptoms can appear several weeks after exposure, so the aim is to monitor people long enough to catch infections that are still incubating,” said Rhys Parry, a molecular virologist at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia.
