Lemon water: A potential adjunct in gout care?

In a retrospective cohort study of 90 patients at two rheumatology clinics, drinking the juice of two lemons mixed with 2 L of water daily for six weeks was associated with significant reductions in serum urate and improvements in glomerular filtration rate. Urate decreased more in gout patients than in those with hyperuricemia (p=0.03), and GFR improved significantly in gout compared with both other groups (p=0.03 vs. hyperuricemia; p=0.0007 vs. controls).
Clinical takeaway: Consider lemon water as a safe, low-cost adjunct for patients with gout or hyperuricemia, while emphasizing that evidence is preliminary and standard therapy remains essential.
