Medical groups sue HHS over vaccine policy shake-up
July 8, 2025

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), along with several major medical societies and a patient plaintiff, has filed a federal lawsuit against Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., alleging unlawful changes to federal COVID-19 vaccine policy. The lawsuit (American Academy of Pediatrics v. Robert F. Kennedy, Jr) claims Kennedy bypassed scientific review and regulatory norms by unilaterally altering vaccine recommendations for children and pregnant individuals.
The plaintiffs cite Kennedy’s abrupt dismissal of 17 CDC vaccine advisers, replacement with anti-vaccine figures, and cancellation of key advisory meetings. They also allege interference with CDC and FDA communications and promotion of discredited vaccine-autism theories. The groups argue these actions violate federal law, undermine public health infrastructure, and erode trust in immunization programs.
The lawsuit seeks to block the policy changes and restore evidence-based oversight. Medical leaders warn that Kennedy’s actions represent not just a procedural breach, but a fundamental threat to the integrity of vaccine policy and the health of children and families.
