New guidance outlines safe ketamine use beyond acute pain, procedural sedation
The American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) provides comprehensive guidelines to ensure the safe administration of ketamine outside of acute pain management and procedural sedation.
Key recommendations
- Ketamine should only be prescribed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for a medical indication, by an appropriately trained and licensed medical professional.
- Prescribe the minimum dose necessary to achieve the desired clinical effect. Avoid doses that produce excessive sedation, unconsciousness, or unresponsiveness.
- Administer IV and IM ketamine only in a monitored setting with appropriate rescue equipment immediately available.
- Ensure routine and immediate access to vital sign monitoring, rescue personnel, and emergency resuscitation equipment.
- Educate patients about the possible adverse effects of ketamine use and ensure healthcare providers are trained in its safe administration.
- Monitor the treatment plan with periodic face-to-face visits and be vigilant for diversion to non-medical purposes.
