Oral micronized progesterone for perimenopausal night sweats and hot flushes

Progesterone cannot be ruled out as a potentially effective treatment to decrease night sweats and improve sleep in perimenopausal women, according to this four-month RCT of oral micronized progesterone vs. placebo. Among 189 perimenopausal women with vasomotor symptoms (VMS), those who received daily 300-mg progesterone perceived a significantly greater decrease in night sweats (P = 0.023) and improved sleep quality (P = 0.005), compared with controls, although VMS score did not differ significantly by treatment group.
