Retavase discontinued, removing a thrombolytic option for STEMI

October 27, 2026

Retavase (reteplase), an intravenous thrombolytic indicated for acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to reduce the risk of death and heart failure, has been discontinued.

The discontinuation affects both the full kit containing two 10-unit single-dose vials and the half kit containing one 10-unit single-dose vial. Chiesi was the sole supplier, and no marketed presentations remain available, according to an October 22 ASHP bulletin. The bulletin does not specify why the company discontinued the product.

Teams that stock reteplase should assess remaining inventory and coordinate with pharmacy to update order sets, emergency medication supplies, and STEMI protocols. Where fibrinolysis is part of the reperfusion pathway, protocols should specify an alternative agent and its dosing and administration requirements.
