Salmonella outbreak linked to raw milk sickened 171, mostly children, across five states

July 28, 2025

A multistate outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to commercially distributed raw milk sickened 171 individuals between September 2023 and March 2024, with 98% of cases reported in California. The outbreak was traced to “brand A” raw milk from dairy farm A, following initial reports from San Diego County. Among those infected, 70% were under 18, and children accounted for the majority of hospitalizations. Whole-genome sequencing confirmed the outbreak strain in raw milk and cheese samples collected from the farm, retail stores, and patients’ homes. The implicated dairy voluntarily recalled its products one week after the outbreak was identified.

Public health implications: Commercially distributed raw dairy products have the potential to cause large and widespread infectious disease outbreaks. Public health messaging should explain the risks associated with these products to consumers, especially those at risk for severe disease, including children.
