Ultra-processed foods tied to higher prostate cancer risk

Clinical takeaway: Add prostate cancer to the outcomes linked to high ultra-processed intake, alongside obesity, metabolic disease, inflammation, cardiovascular events, and premature death. Affordability and access, not willingness, usually limit how far patients can shift toward minimally processed food.
American adults get nearly 60% of their calories from products assembled in a factory rather than a kitchen. For children the figure is about 70%. Ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are the soft drinks, packaged cereals and snacks, and processed meats built from refined oils, sugars, starches, and salt, then stabilized with additives that hold flavor and texture for months.
The mechanisms proposed for how UPFs might raise cancer risk include metabolic disruption, chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and a gut microbiome shift. Regardless of the precise route, UPFs have already been linked to a slew of harms, and prostate cancer joins that list. The latest estimates come from a survey analysis of US men.
The higher the UPF intake, the higher the risk. Men in the upper half of intake had a 31% higher risk of prostate cancer than the lowest-intake group, and the gap held at 27% when moderate consumers were folded into the high-intake side. Adjusting for age, smoking, race and ethnicity, and poverty status barely moved either figure.
The data on the heaviest consumers offered a bit of a wrinkle. Among men getting more than 44% of their calories from UPFs, risk ran 34% higher but missed significance, which the authors tied to a thin case count rather than an absent effect.
The data came from 17,024 men ages 18 and older in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), 2003 through 2023. Two 24-hour recalls and the NOVA classification set intake; prostate cancer was self-reported. Diet and diagnosis were measured at the same time.
"Among adult men in this nationally representative U.S. population, those who consumed higher amounts of UPFs had significantly higher risks of the subsequent development of prostate cancer," said Charles Hennekens, MD, senior author and professor of medicine and preventive medicine at Florida Atlantic University's Schmidt College of Medicine. "These findings add to emerging evidence that UPFs have major adverse health effects and underscore the need for large-scale observational studies and randomized trials to adequately test the hypothesis."
