Wasabi may significantly boost memory, according to randomized trial
December 7, 2023

Intake of 0.8 mg of 6-methylsulfinyl hexyl isothiocyanate (6-MSITC)—the main bioactive compound in wasabi—for 12 weeks significantly improved memory functioning, including episodic and working memory in healthy older adults, compared with controls.
- Although previous research has investigated the effects of 6-MSITC on cognitive functions, this study was the first to demonstrate that it has a benefit on memory functioning in healthy, older adults.
- Seventy-two adults (ages 60 and older) were randomly assigned to 6-MSITC or placebo groups. Participants were asked to take a 6-MSITC supplement (100 mg wasabi extract powder containing 6-MSITC 0.8 mg) or placebo for 12 weeks.
- Researchers checked a wide range of cognitive performance (e.g., executive function, episodic memory, processing speed, working memory, and attention) at the pre- and post-intervention periods.
- After three months, the 6-MSITC group showed a significant improvement in working and episodic memory performance compared with the placebo group. Subjects who received the wasabi supplement saw their episodic memory scores jump an average of 18% and scored on average 14% higher than the placebo group overall.
- The 6-MSITC group showed a significant improvement in working memory, measured by digit span backward, and in episodic memory performance, measured by immediate logical memory, delayed logical memory, and face and second name test.
- However, researchers didn't find any significant improvements in other cognitive domains such as as inhibitory control, executive function, or processing speed.
