Zyrtec launches drug-free nasal barrier spray for allergy prevention

Zyrtec Allergen Shield Spray is a new drug-free nasal mist designed to reduce allergy symptoms by physically limiting contact between airborne allergens and the nasal lining. Unlike antihistamine or corticosteroid nasal sprays, the product does not rely on a pharmacologic mechanism to prevent or relieve symptoms.
The spray contains hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), a plant-derived material that forms a lightweight gel barrier when it contacts moisture inside the nose. The barrier is intended to trap allergens such as pollen, pet dander, and dust before they can trigger an allergic response.
That mechanism makes the spray primarily a pre-exposure option. It can be used before predictable allergen encounters, such as spending time outdoors during high-pollen periods, mowing the lawn, cleaning, or visiting a home with pets. The barrier begins forming within minutes and provides up to six hours of protection, according to the manufacturer. The product can be used up to three times daily as needed.
The spray is steroid-free and contains no antihistamine, decongestant, or cetirizine, distinguishing it from other products in the Zyrtec line. Its nonpharmacologic approach could provide another option for patients who want to minimize medication use or add a physical barrier to their existing allergy-management strategy.
Zyrtec Allergen Shield Spray is intended for adults and children aged 12 years and older. The OTC product is now available at major US retailers and online.
